Ms. AJ (Ernestine’s mom) funeral create emotional Ernestine’s Final Goodbye 💔

Scene: A quiet, flower-lined chapel filled with soft organ music. The pews are filled with mourners. Ms. AJ’s casket sits at the front. Ernestine stands nearby, holding a folded handkerchief. Her best friend, Lisa, approaches quietly.

Lisa:
Hey, Ernie… you okay?

Ernestine (quietly):
No… not really. I keep thinking she’s gonna walk in here any minute and tell everyone to stop crying and sit up straight. [soft chuckle through tears] She hated people fussing.

Lisa:
She was strong like that. Fierce, but soft too. Like… fire wrapped in velvet. You got that from her.

Ernestine:
I don’t feel strong right now, Lisa. I feel like a piece of me got buried the moment she took her last breath. It’s like the ground opened and swallowed all the light. How do I move forward without her?

Lisa (gently touching her shoulder):
One breath at a time, one memory at a time. What do you remember most about her?

Ernestine:
Everything. Her hands. They were always busy—cooking, cleaning, fixing my hair, holding mine when I was scared. Her voice… especially when she’d sing in the kitchen. She'd hum old gospel songs while frying catfish. That sound meant I was safe.
[pauses, tears falling]
Even when I was grown and pretending I didn’t need her… I always did. I always will.

Lisa:
You were her whole world, Ernie. And she was yours. But you carry her in you now. You’re the echo of her voice, the warmth of her smile, the steel of her spine.

Ernestine (sniffles):
You know what breaks me? I never said thank you enough. Never told her how much I admired her. She gave up so much for me. She carried the weight of the world and still made room for my dreams. And now I don’t get to say it… not the way I should’ve.

Lisa:
She knew. Believe me, she knew. But maybe you should say it anyway… say it to her now.

Ernestine (walks slowly to the casket, rests her hand gently on it):
Mama…
I wish I could hear you fuss at me one more time. I wish I could see your face when I tell you about my new promotion, or call you just to vent about my day…
But more than anything, I wish I could say thank you.
Thank you for every sacrifice, for every night you stayed up sick with worry just to make sure I was okay.
Thank you for raising me to be brave, even though you knew the world would be cruel.
Thank you for your laugh, your strength, your stubbornness.
You were my foundation, my light, my best friend.
And I’m sorry… I’m so sorry if I ever made you feel unappreciated.
I see it all now. Everything.
You were never just “Mom.”
You were a warrior. A queen. A miracle in human skin.
And this goodbye… it feels impossible.
But I’ll carry you in my heart for the rest of my life.
Every step, every breath, every achievement—I’ll do it with your name whispering in my soul.

[She kneels beside the casket, sobbing softly. Lisa stands quietly nearby, holding space for the grief.]

Lisa (after a few moments):
That was beautiful, Ernie. She heard you. I know she did.

Ernestine (wiping her tears):
Then I hope she knows she was loved beyond words.

Lisa:
She did. And she still does. Let’s take her light and keep it burning. For her. For you.

[Scene fades as the organ softly plays “His Eye Is on the Sparrow.” The camera lingers on Ernestine’s tear-streaked face, full of pain… but also peace.]
