Judge Hernandez:
Alright, let’s proceed. Case number 2047B – Shayla Thompson versus Anthony Reed. Ms. Thompson, I see here you're suing Mr. Reed on grounds of... "cohabitation with an unsuitable partner in violation of prior agreement"? Please explain.
Shayla (standing confidently):
Yes, Your Honor. When Anthony and I separated, we agreed—verbally but clearly—that neither of us would bring unstable or controversial individuals around our daughter. He’s now living with a woman who’s not only divorced, but whose ex-husband has an active restraining order against her. I am suing for full custody and emotional distress.
Anthony (interrupting):
That’s a lie. Tamara’s ex is abusive. She left him. She’s not a danger to anyone.
Judge Hernandez (raising a hand):
One at a time. Ms. Thompson, is this claim part of an existing custody agreement?
Shayla:
Yes. We have shared custody. But I feel my daughter’s well-being is in danger. She told me Tamara screams at her for no reason. There’s chaos in that house.
Attorney Marquez:
Your Honor, we’d like to submit a recorded phone conversation between Shayla and her daughter, where the child says she’s afraid to sleep at Anthony’s.
Judge Hernandez:
Admitted. Mr. Reed, your response?
Anthony (calmly):
Look, Judge. I moved in with Tamara six months ago. Yes, she’s divorced, but so is Shayla. Tamara is a teacher, a mother herself, and she’s been nothing but kind to my daughter. Shayla just hates the fact that I moved on.
Shayla (sarcastic):
Moved on? You were dating me in March, and you moved in with her by April. Sounds more like you overlapped.
Judge Hernandez:
Ms. Thompson—stay on topic.
Tamara (raising her hand nervously):
May I say something, Your Honor?
Judge Hernandez:
Go ahead, Ms. Blake.
Tamara (standing):
I would never harm Anthony’s daughter. Yes, I have a past. My ex was violent. I got out. That should make me stronger, not suspicious. Shayla doesn’t know me. She's judging me based on rumors and fear.
Shayla (standing, furious):
Oh, I do know about you. Three boyfriends in two years? A sealed case in Montgomery County for “domestic disturbance”? I do my research.
Anthony (shaking his head):
You’re grasping. That case was dropped, and you know it.
Judge Hernandez (firmly):
Everyone, calm down. I’m not interested in character assassinations. I'm here to determine whether the current living situation puts the child in harm’s way. That’s the legal threshold. Ms. Thompson, do you have any proof of harm?
Attorney Marquez:
We do. In addition to the audio, we have a written statement from the child’s school counselor noting increased anxiety, stomach aches, and absenteeism around the time Tamara moved in.
Anthony (visibly shaken):
What? I didn’t know about that...
Judge Hernandez:
Mr. Reed, did you notice any changes in your daughter’s behavior?
Anthony (softly):
She’s been quieter lately. I thought it was just the new school year. I didn’t connect it to Tamara.
Tamara (tearfully):
Maybe... maybe she is uncomfortable. I never meant to push too hard. I just wanted to be a part of their life.
Judge Hernandez (sighs):
This is serious. I am going to order a temporary reevaluation of the shared custody agreement. For now, Mr. Reed, your daughter will stay with her mother full-time until a family psychologist can assess the living situation.
Shayla (smugly):
Thank you, Your Honor. I just want what’s best for her.
Anthony (to Shayla):
You could’ve just talked to me.
Shayla:
And you could’ve respected what we agreed on. Instead, you moved a stranger into our daughter’s life without asking.
Judge Hernandez (banging gavel):
Enough. We’ll reconvene in 30 days with findings from the court-appointed therapist. Until then, court is adjourned.
[Scene fades out with a heavy silence as all parties exit the courtroom.]
