Angelina in shock when she received the divorce papers from brodie😱

Setting:
Angelina's apartment, late afternoon. The room is quiet except for the ticking of a wall clock. A manila envelope lies torn open on the table. Angelina paces the room, holding the papers in her trembling hands. She picks up her phone and calls Brodie. After a few rings, he answers.

Angelina: (angrily but with disbelief)
Brodie… what the hell is this?

Brodie: (quietly)
You got the papers.

Angelina:
Don’t say it like that. Don’t say it like we discussed this. You didn’t even warn me. You just—what? Sent a lawyer after me?

Brodie: (sighs)
I didn’t know how else to do it, Angie. Every time we talk, it ends in a fight. Or silence. I thought this might be… cleaner.

Angelina:
Cleaner?! Are you serious? There is nothing clean about blindsiding your wife with divorce papers. We’ve been married eight years, Brodie. Eight years!

Brodie:
I know. I lived every one of them too, remember?

Angelina:
Then how can you just throw it away like this? You didn’t even have the decency to talk to me?

Brodie:
I tried, Angelina. So many times. But you always shut me down. You stopped listening. You stopped caring.

Angelina: (voice breaking)
That’s not true. I’ve been fighting for us. I’ve been trying to hold it together while you just drift further and further away. You go to work, you come home late, you barely say two words to me—

Brodie: (interrupting)
Because I couldn’t breathe anymore. I felt like I was drowning in this marriage.

Angelina:
So your answer was to run?

Brodie:
My answer was to end the pain—for both of us. We’re not happy anymore, Angelina. You know it. You just won’t admit it.

Angelina: (whispering)
I still loved you, Brodie… even when it hurt. I believed in us.

Brodie:
I did too. For a long time. But love isn’t enough when everything else is broken. The trust, the intimacy, the communication—it’s all gone.

Angelina: (tears falling)
You should’ve told me. To my face. Not like this. Not through a lawyer’s letter like I was just a client or a mistake.

Brodie: (softly)
You were never a mistake. I loved you. I still care about you. But we’re not the same people we were when we got married.

Angelina:
People grow. They evolve. That doesn’t mean you give up the second it gets hard!

Brodie:
It wasn’t just hard. It was unsustainable. You think I made this decision easily? I sat with this for months. I cried over it, lost sleep over it. But the more I waited, the more we both suffered.

Angelina: (long pause)
So that’s it, huh? You’re just done.

Brodie:
I’m… tired, Angelina. And I think you are too. Maybe not ready to admit it yet, but I see it in your eyes. You’re not happy either.

Angelina:
I’m angry. I’m hurt. That doesn’t mean I wanted this. I would’ve rather we went to therapy, screamed at each other, fought for it.

Brodie:
And maybe we should’ve. But we didn’t. We let it rot in silence.

Angelina: (quietly)
So what now? You just walk away? We sign the papers, pretend it never happened?

Brodie: (emotion in his voice)
No. We grieve it. We take time. We remember the good. And maybe, someday… we forgive each other.

Angelina:
You’re a coward, Brodie. But you’re right about one thing. We let it rot. And now I’m the one left holding the pieces.

Brodie: (whispers)
I’m sorry, Angelina.

Angelina: (hangs up)
So am I.

Silence returns. Angelina sinks into the couch, the papers still in her lap. A tear falls onto the signature line.
