📍Setting: Shayla’s apartment – evening
(She just checked the bank app and found repeated transfers from Anthony’s account to Angelina Torres. She waits for him to get home.)
[Door opens – Anthony walks in, humming to himself]
Shayla:
Anthony… we need to talk.
Anthony:
Hey babe, what’s wrong? You sound serious.
Shayla:
I was checking the joint account earlier… And I saw something. Multiple transfers. Same name. Over months. To Angelina.
Anthony:
[Freezes, then sighs]
Shayla… I can explain.
Shayla:
You better. Because I’m sitting here trying to understand why my boyfriend is sending money to his ex in secret. And not once did you think I deserved to know?
Anthony:
It wasn’t like that, I swear. It’s not what you think.
Shayla:
Then tell me what it is, because I’m THIS close to walking out that door.
Anthony:
[Slowly sits down]
Angelina’s been going through something. Her mom got sick—real bad. She couldn’t afford the treatments, and she was too proud to ask anyone. She came to me as a last resort.
Shayla:
So you… what? Became her personal ATM?
Anthony:
I was just trying to help. That’s all. It wasn’t about her, Shayla. It was about doing the right thing. I didn’t tell you because… I knew how it would look.
Shayla:
You knew how it would look because you knew it was shady. You hid it. You never mentioned her once in months. Not even when I asked if you two ever talk.
Anthony:
Because I didn’t want to hurt you. And I didn’t want you to think I had feelings for her. I don’t, Shayla. Not even a little.
Shayla:
You thought lying to me would hurt me less than being honest?
Anthony:
I didn’t lie… I just didn’t tell you.
Shayla:
That is a lie. Withholding something this big? That’s a betrayal, Anthony.
Anthony:
I didn’t want to put more stress on you. You’ve had enough with work, your mom, everything. I figured… I could handle this on my own.
Shayla:
You handled it like a coward. Like someone who wasn’t thinking about “us,” but about her.
Anthony:
It wasn’t about her! It was about doing something decent. I didn’t expect it to go on this long. But she kept needing help, and I couldn’t just… walk away.
Shayla:
You should’ve talked to me first. Not make that choice for both of us. That’s what partners do.
Anthony:
You’re right. I messed up. I didn’t think it through. I just reacted.
Shayla:
So what now? Are you still sending her money?
Anthony:
No. The last transfer was two weeks ago. Her mom passed. She texted to say thanks and that she wouldn’t ask again. I didn’t even reply.
Shayla:
Do you still love her?
Anthony:
[Looks her dead in the eye]
No. Not even a little. I love you. Everything I’ve built is with you. But I get it if you don’t believe that right now.
Shayla:
I don’t know what to believe. I feel like I don’t even know who you are right now.
Anthony:
Then let me show you. I’ll be transparent—every message, every transfer. You can see it all. I don’t want to lose you over this.
Shayla:
You might already have. But I need time. I need space to think.
Anthony:
I understand. And I’ll give you that. But I’m not giving up on us, Shayla. I swear I’m not.
Shayla:
You said she texted you… to say thank you?
Anthony:
Yeah. Why?
Shayla:
[Pulls out her phone, taps the screen a few times]
That’s weird. Because I messaged her. Just now.
Anthony:
[Stiffens]
You what?
Shayla:
I wanted to hear her side. And guess what?
Anthony:
[Swallows hard]
…What did she say?
Shayla:
She said she hasn’t spoken to you in over a year. That you offered to help her. That she never asked.
Anthony:
Wait—what?
Shayla:
She said you showed up out of the blue. Said you owed her. That you had a “debt to settle.” What debt, Anthony?
Anthony:
[Voice lowers]
She’s lying.
Shayla:
Is she? Because she sent me screenshots. You begged her not to tell me. “Don’t ruin this for me,” you said.
Anthony:
Shayla… I can explain.
Shayla:
No. You will explain. Because right now, I don’t know if you’re the man who made a mistake…
…or the man who’s been lying to me this whole time.
[Silence stretches. Anthony stares at her, unreadable.]
Anthony:
I think you should sit down.
Shayla:
Why?
Anthony:
Because there’s more.
A lot more.
