“📩😱 Shayla Receives Court Mail About Kai’s DNA Test”
The characters are:
-
Shayla – the mother, shocked and confused
-
Tamika – her best friend, sharp and protective
-
Jordan – Shayla’s ex, possibly Kai’s father
-
Voice Mail Message – a cryptic call that adds tension
[Scene: Shayla’s Apartment – Afternoon. The sky is gray. Thunder rumbles softly in the distance. Shayla is standing at the kitchen counter, holding an envelope with a state seal on it. Her hands are trembling slightly.]
Shayla:
(whispering) What the hell is this…?
[She rips the envelope open slowly. Her eyes scan the document. Her breath hitches.]
Shayla:
No. No, no, no. This has to be some mistake.
[Phone rings. It's Tamika.]
Shayla (answering):
Tamika… girl… something just came in the mail.
Tamika (concerned):
What’s wrong? You sound like you just saw a ghost.
Shayla:
I think I did. It’s from the court. Family division. They want me to appear… for a DNA hearing. For Kai.
Tamika:
Wait. A what?! A DNA hearing?! Shayla, are you saying someone filed for a paternity test?
Shayla:
That’s what it says. Jordan A. Matthews vs. Shayla R. Williams... regarding minor child, Kai Matthews.
Tamika (silent for a beat):
Jordan? As in your ex Jordan? The one who ghosted before you even found out you were pregnant?
Shayla:
The same Jordan. I haven’t seen or heard from him in seven years, Tamika. Why now? Why this?
Tamika:
You tell me. Did he ever doubt Kai was his?
Shayla:
He never even asked. He walked away before he knew. I tried to tell him, but he didn’t want to hear it. Said he “wasn’t ready to be anyone’s father.”
Tamika:
So now he wants a test? After seven years? Girl, this smells dirty.
[Shayla walks to the living room and stares at Kai’s backpack on the floor. Her face softens, then hardens again.]
Shayla:
I don’t want to drag Kai into this. He doesn’t even know about Jordan. He thinks David—my ex fiancé—is his dad.
Tamika:
Then maybe it’s time he knows the truth. But first—you need to lawyer up. This ain’t just about Jordan being curious. If it’s gone through court, he’s serious.
[Phone buzzes. New voicemail. Unknown number.]
Shayla:
Hold on—someone just left me a voicemail. Unknown number.
Tamika:
Play it. Put it on speaker.
[Shayla plays the message. A male voice crackles through.]
Voicemail:
“Shayla… I know this is sudden, but I need to do the right thing. I want to know if he’s mine. I deserve to know, and if he is—I want full custody. You left me in the dark for too long.”
[Silence. Shayla’s mouth drops open.]
Tamika:
Full—FULL CUSTODY?! Oh HELL no. He really thinks he can pop up out of nowhere and take your child?
Shayla:
He’s acting like I kept Kai from him… like he wasn’t the one who disappeared.
Tamika:
He’s trying to flip the script. This man is dangerous. Not physically, but legally? He might just have enough manipulation in him to make this messy.
Shayla:
I feel sick. I don’t even know what Kai’s going to ask when the court contacts the school or starts asking questions.
Tamika:
We need to move smart. First: call a family lawyer. Second: document everything—messages, missed calls, anything showing he abandoned you. Third: don’t say a word to Kai until we know what we’re dealing with.
Shayla:
You think he’s serious about custody?
Tamika:
Girl, nobody goes through the courts unless they mean business. He either wants something, or someone told him something. Maybe he found out you're doing well. Maybe someone whispered in his ear about child support or revenge.
[Thunder cracks louder outside. Shayla walks to the window, breathing hard.]
Shayla (whispers):
He has no idea who he’s messing with.
