[Scene: Bethany’s Apartment – Late Afternoon]

Bethany is scrolling through Shara’s Instagram stories when she sees something that makes her freeze. A boomerang of two passports and a caption: “Counting down! 🌴✈️ #secrettrip” with Larry tagged in the corner, half-hidden.

Bethany (to herself):
No. No freaking way. What the hell is this?

She immediately dials Larry.

Larry (picks up, sounding casual):
Hey babe, what’s up?

Bethany (voice shaking):
What’s up? What’s up?! Larry, are you seriously going on a trip with Shara?

Larry (pauses):
Uh… what?

Bethany:
Don’t play dumb with me. I just saw her story. “#SecretTrip”? With you tagged? You weren’t even gonna tell me?

Larry (sighs):
Okay, first of all, calm down. It’s not what it looks like.

Bethany:
Don’t tell me to calm down! You’re planning a secret getaway with my best friend! And you didn’t think that was something I should maybe know about?

Larry:
Look, it wasn’t supposed to be like this. It was going to be a surprise.

Bethany:
For who, Larry? Because I’m pretty sure I’m not the one getting surprised. I’m the one getting lied to.

Larry:
No one’s lying to you. Shara and I were working on something special for your birthday. It’s not a trip for us, it was supposed to be for you. All three of us.

Bethany (snorts):
Right. Because surprise birthday vacations are totally planned without the birthday girl knowing… and posted about on social media with cryptic hashtags.

Larry:
She wasn’t supposed to post that. I told her to keep it quiet.

Bethany hangs up and immediately FaceTimes Shara. She picks up after a couple of rings.

Shara (smiling awkwardly):
Hey, B. What’s going on?

Bethany (deadpan):
You tell me. Are you seriously taking a trip with Larry?

Shara (blinks, then smiles wider):
Oh my god—no. That was not what it looked like.

Bethany:
Then explain it. Because right now it looks like you’re sneaking around with my boyfriend.

Shara:
Beth, it was a surprise. We were planning a weekend in Cabo. It was gonna be a thank-you gift. For being such a good friend. Larry was helping me organize it. Flights, hotel, everything.

Bethany:
Then why tag him and say “secret trip” like it’s some damn rom-com?

Shara:
Ugh, I was being dramatic. I didn’t think you’d see it that fast. I was gonna delete it. I just got excited.

Bethany (narrowing eyes):
Do you like him?

Shara (taken aback):
What? No. Bethany, no. That’s not what this is.

Bethany:
You’ve always been flirty with him. You laugh at everything he says. You touch his arm, act all cute.

Shara (quietly):
That’s just how I am. I’m touchy with everyone. You know that.

Bethany:
I thought I knew. But now? I don’t know anything anymore. I trusted you. I trusted both of you.

Shara:
Beth, please don’t do this. I would never cross that line. I was trying to do something nice.

Bethany (tearing up):
Then why does it feel like the two people I care about most were just… hiding something?

Shara (softly):
Because we were. But not because we were betraying you. We just messed up how we went about it.

Bethany:
Well, congrats. You definitely messed up.

[A long silence.]

Larry (texting Bethany minutes later):

“I get that you’re hurt. I should’ve told you. You deserve better than secrets. We’ll cancel the trip if that’s what you want. Just tell me how to fix this.”

Bethany (after staring at the screen for a while, finally texts back):

“Don’t cancel it. Just don’t go without me.”

Shara (texts too):

“I’m sorry. I really did want this to be a happy surprise. I should’ve known better.”

Bethany (responds, short but sharp):

“Yeah. You should’ve.”
